Background of the i-BEMS Smart Energy Innovation for Sustainable Buildings

The i-BEMS Smart Energy Innovation for Sustainable Buildings was developed to address pressing challenges in the energy sector, particularly the excessive consumption levels in multi-story buildings. Without detailed monitoring, building energy use often becomes inefficient, leading to wasted resources and higher costs. i-BEMS solves this by delivering precise, real-time energy usage data for each floor, enabling smarter load management and significant reductions in both electricity usage and monthly expenses.

How i-BEMS Smart Energy Innovation for Sustainable Buildings Works

The system has been successfully implemented in Building O at Telkom University. It uses smart power meters installed on each floor, connected to a central control unit via RS485 communication. i-BEMS tracks more than 90 energy parameters—such as current, voltage, active power, reactive power, apparent power, and power quality. All readings are presented in an intuitive, real-time dashboard with daily graphs that highlight differences in consumption between weekdays and weekends. This monitoring capability enables future automation, such as automatically turning off devices when rooms are unoccupied.

Testing and Implementation of i-BEMS Smart Energy Innovation for Sustainable Buildings

Registered under copyright, i-BEMS has been operating for over a year with stable performance and no major issues. While currently limited to internal use, the innovation shows strong potential for wider application in offices, commercial complexes, and educational institutions that aim to prioritize efficiency and sustainability.

Commercialization Potential of i-BEMS Smart Energy Innovation for Sustainable Buildings

Currently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6, i-BEMS is on track toward commercialization. Further testing to reach TRL 9, along with collaboration with strategic partners, will accelerate its adoption. As the global movement toward energy efficiency and sustainability grows, i-BEMS stands out as a vital tool for creating smarter and greener buildings. RI‑IBSE welcomes partnerships to bring this innovation to a broader market and amplify its positive impact.
